Abstract

931,262. Variable-speed epicyclic gear; clutch combinations. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Dec. 18, 1961 [Dec. 17, 1960], No. 45325/61. Class 80 (2). In a motor vehicle, a hydro-dynamic torque converter P, T, L, having a centrifugal bridging clutch 2 disposed in the core space of the converter, drives a planet gear providing two reduced forward ratios, direct drive and one reverse by an overlap train comprising stepped planets 9; intermeshed planets 10; an output ring 11; first and second suns 7, 5, selectively clutchable at R1, R2 to the output 3 of the preceding torque converter; and reaction brakes B1 B2, for the first sun and the planet carrier. Ratios are as follows: one-way low, with the rear train acting alone, by clutch R1, with carrier reaction taken on a one-way detent F3, which latter can be bridged by the core brake B2 for two-way low. One-way second, with the trains compounded, by clutch R1 and a rear half of the brake B 1 which acts through a oneway detent F2, which latter can be bridged for two-way second (e.g. for starting in second) by applying also a directly acting front half of the brake B1. Third, by both clutches R1, R2 for lock-up direct-drive. Reverse, compounded, by clutch R2 and cone brake B2.
