Abstract

578,602. Reverse-gearing. SELF-CHANGING GEAR CO., Ltd., WILSON, A. G., and MILLER, A. A. Dec. 29, 1944, No. 19914/43. [Class 80 (ii)] In an epicyclic reverse gear, the driving and driven shafts b, c are coaxial and the ends are nested together. The sun wheel a is formed on a sleeve p, the planet gears e are carried by a frame f having teeth o and the annulus gear g is connected to a frame h having teeth m. A set of dogs 11 is formed on a sliding member 14 splined on the driving shaft b and is connected by a coupling 15 that permits relative rotation to a member 16, splined on the driven shaft c, and having a set of dogs 12. The member 16 is moved by fingers 18 actuated by the gear lever 21; the fingers 18 also move the dogs 23 formed on the sliding member 13 and engaging teeth 24 on the fixed housing. Clutch plates q are splined on the sleeve p and plates q<1> are splined on member r within which is a nut t threaded on an extension of the fixed casing The dogs 11, 12 and 13 are shown in the neutral position. and when moved to the left, the dogs 11 engage the teeth 10 connected to the sun wheel a, the dogs 12 engage the teeth m connected to the annulus, and the dogs 13 engage both sets of teeth o and 24 to hold the planet carrier f stationary and a reverse drive is transmitted from the driving to the driven shaft. When the dogs are moved to the right, the dog 11 engages the teeth m and the dog 12 engages the teeth o. The drive is then transmitted from the driving shaft b to the annulus and a forward speed is transmitted to the driven shaft; the nut t tightens the clutch plates q, q' to ensure the sun wheel remains stationary. The shaft b is fitted with a magnetic brake 26, 27 that is energized by contacts 28, 31, 32 associated with the gear lever so that the shaft b is slowed whilst the lever is in the intermediate positions during changing. Additional means may be provided to prevent acceleration of the prime mover whilst the brake is applied.
