A hydro-mechanical gear system for motor vehicles comprises a hydraulic torqueconverter 4, 5, 6 permanently connected between driving and driven shafts 1, 8, and, in parallel therewith, a countershaft reduction gear 15, 16, 23, 24 which is brought into action, particularly for obtaining combined engine and hydraulic braking, by a friction clutch 18. A directdrive clutch 9, 10, 11 may also be provided between the shafts 1, 8 and a change-speed or reversing gear may be arranged beyond the shaft 8.
