Abstract
308,961. Buckley, J. H. Dec. 31, 1927. Variable-speed gearing.-An epicyclic slipping gear unit is arranged in the transmission system of a motor-vehicle in series with the usual change-speed gear. In Fig. 1, the unit is arranged between the change-speed gear a and the cardan transmission d. The unit comprises a drum h which carries planets j meshing with a sun gear f on the in-take shaft b and with a sun gear g on the out-put shaft e. When the drum h is held fast by a brake m, the shaft e is driven reversely at a speed which is varied by allowing the drum to slip within the brake. In Fig. 4, the usual clutch s is shown bolted up, and the epicyclic unit is used instead of the clutch between the engine shaft t and the change-speed gear a. Instead of a bevel epicyclic train, a spur train with interengaging planets may be used.
