[Class 80 (ii).] The invention of the parent Specification comprises variable speed gearing for motor vehicles of the type comprising aligned driving and driven shafts with a parallel lay shaft and sliding gears on the driven shaft modified by the provision of a free-wheel clutch such as 12 between a boss 8 on the lay-shaft constant mesh wheel 1 and a boss 10 on the coaxial layshaft reduction unit 6. To lock this free-wheel to allow the engine to be used for braking the vehicle, a sleeve 4 adapted to slide on the splined hub 3 of gear 1 carries ratchet teeth 5 on its end face to engage like teeth on the part 10.
