Abstract
215,777. Steiner, L. May 9, 1923, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing for driving and steering endless-track and wheeled motor vehicles. Two shafts 6 driving the road wheels or track sprockets 5 are connected together through differential gearing 11 the sun pinions 9 of which may be independently clutched by clutches 8 to chain wheels 4 driven from a countershaft 1. When both clutches are engaged both sides are positively driven at the same rate and if one clutch is disengaged the drive on that side is freed and the vehicle steers to that side. If, now, a brake 12 is applied to the differential casing so as to check its rotation the disengaged shaft 6 is driven through the differential gear at a rate depending on the amount of slip permitted to the differential casing and varying from a speed nearly equal to that of the other shaft to an equal speed in the opposite direction when the casing is held fast. The countershaft 1 is driven from a pinion 15 through either of the sliding reverse gears 2, 16.
