Abstract

209,305. Ephgrave, G. H. Jan. 29,1923. Variable-speed gearing comprises a spur epicyclic train D, E, F controlled through a worm pair S, R and disc-and-roller gearing O, L with provision for a direct drive through a friction clutch B<2>. For the variable speeds, the driving- shaft A is connected by a clutch B' to a gear M driving the disc L, and also through a sleeve C to the sun gear D. The friction gear causes the planet carrier G to yield, so that the internal gear F is driven fastest when the worm pair is locked. By the side of the epicyclic train is a similar train F, E', H to reverse the motion a second time, and drive the gear H and with it the shaft I in the same direction as the shaft A is turning, so permitting of the use of the direct-drive clutch. Reversed driving is effected by causing the train H, E', F to turn solid by releasing a brake K and closing a clutch T, the carrier G being locked by the worm pair. A reducing-train may be interposed between the elements S, G.
