Abstract
139,970. Guilford, P. G. June 6, 1919. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing comprises three spur trains, the sun-gears S<1>, S<2>, S<3> of which are secured together and adapted to be connected to the driving-shaft Y by a dogclutch D<2> slidable thereon. A fly-wheel F secured to the shaft Y is, adapted to be connected by a friction clutch F<1> to the annulus A' of the first train. A carrier C' of the planet-gears P' of the first train is secured to the annulus A<2> of the second train. A carrier C<2> of the planet-gears P<2> of the second train is secured to the annulus A' of the third train. A carrier C<3> of the planet-gears P<3> of the third train is secured to the driven shaft Z. The clutch D<2> is engaged for all forward speeds and is disengaged to prevent idle running of the gearing when the engine is free. The first or highest speed is a solid drive obtained by closing the clutch F'. The second speed is obtained by applying a brake B<1> to the annulus A'. All three trains are then operative. The third speed is obtained by applying a brake B<2> to the annulus A<2>. The two trains on the right are then operative. The fourth speed is obtained by holding the annulus A<3>, when the corresponding train alone is operative. To effect reversed driving, the clutch D<2> is opened, the clutch F' is closed, and the annulus A<3> is held, all three trains becoming operative. The invention is suitable for motor-vehicles.
