489,396. Hydraulic transmission of power ; change-speed gearing. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. March 12, 1937, No. 7365. Convention date, March 12, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A motor vehicle is propelled by an hydraulic transformer in combination with a mechanical change-speed gear having a step-up ratio. Thus, in the case of a two-speed mechanical gear having a direct drive and an " over-speed,"' the vehicle is driven through the direct drive at low and moderate speeds, but at higher speeds the over-speed ratio is brought into use and the transformer speed is reduced so that it works more efficiently. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the driving runner 2 is fixed to the driving shaft 6 and the driven runner 3 to a shaft 10 driving the vehicle propeller shaft 19 through two-speed gear controlled by a sliding clutch 24. The gear train 26, 21 drives the shaft 19 at a higher speed than the shaft 10, and the train 25, 20 drives the shaft 19 at the same speed as shaft 10. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the change-speed gear is arranged before the transformer 2, 3, 4, and drives the input shaft 6<1> thereof either directly through a clutch 28 or at a higher speed through the gear trains 25, 20 and 21, 26.
