Abstract
484,848. Variable speed toothed gearing. GES. ZUR KONSTRUKTIONUND VERWERTUNG AUTOMATISCH MECHANISCHER GETRIEBE. March 18, 1937, No. 8026. Convention date, March 18, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] In automatic variable-speed toothed gearing for vehicles &c. in which the change of gear is speed-controlled, the driving fly-wheel 1 carries flanges 2, 3 adapted to be connected by centrifugal segment clutches 13, 5, 20, operating at similar speeds, to toothed wheels 25, 24, and the driven shaft 17, respectively. A lay-shaft 28 carries rigidly wheels 27, 31, gearing respectively with the wheel 25 and a wheel 32 connected by a one-way clutch 34 to the driven shaft, and is connected by a one-way clutch 30 to a wheel 26 gearing with the wheel 24. The speed of the engine determines the engagement of the clutch 5 with the low-speed wheel 24, which drives the shaft 17 through the lay-shaft and at the same time drives the wheel 25 at reduced speed. When the speed of the wheel 25 increases sufficiently the clutch 13 is engaged and the wheel 25 is driven by the engine, the one-way clutch 30 overrunning, and the shaft 17 is driven at an increased speed, lower than that of the engine, through the lay-shaft. When the speed of the driven shaft 17 increases sufficiently, the clutch 20 engages and a solid drive is obtained, the one-way clutch 34 overrunning. More than three speeds may be provided for.
