Abstract

420,087. Variable-speed gearing. RUSHFIRTH, S., 4, Dorset Road, Lytham-St.-Annes, Lancashire. May 25, 1933, No. 15083. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to variablespeed gearing suitable for vehicles of the kind comprising aligned driving and driven shafts 7, 12 over the adjacent ends of which is mounted a housing 8 rotatable relatively to both shafts and carrying one or more countershafts 24 with alternative trains of gearing for connecting the countershafts to the main shafts there being centrally moving toothed gear and clutch elements such as 31, 32 therefor and a brake 47 for securing the housing 8 against rotation during countershaft drives. A friction clutch 37 to facilitate gear changing on all ratios is arranged directly between and for coupling together the two main shafts 7, 12, instead of being circumferentially arranged as in the arrangement of Specification 347,788. In addition to two reduced forward speeds and reversed drive with the brake 47 applied, there is a solid high-speed drive with the brake disengaged effected by engaging clutch teeth 38 on the friction clutch member 37 engaging clutch teeth 39 on the driven shaft 12. The member 37 turns with the shaft 7 and is controlled through a central rod 40 from a striking ring 41 which is biassed to the left to engage the top speed clutch 38, 39 by a spring 45. Suitable connections interpose a distance piece, not shown, behind a stop 46 when the brake 47 is engaged to prevent the clutch 38, 39 being engaged during countershaft drives. The ring 41 is engaged at 42 by a connection to an engine clutch, not shown, so that at each disengagement of the latter, the synchronizing friction clutch 37 is engaged, the brake 47 being then always released, so that all parts within the casing rotate with little relative motion to the end that change of mesh can be effected without shock. On release of the clutch pedal, the clutch 37 is disengaged and the drive picks up on the new speed.
