Abstract
405,214. Claw clutches; variable - speed gearing. REGGIO, F. C., 17, Rue J. B. Dumas, Paris. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 23129. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] In a claw clutch comprising an externallytoothed member 27 slidable axially into engagement with an internally-toothed member 23, rods 32 slidable in axial holes 31 in the member 27 carry at one end a conical friction ring 35 adapted to co-operate with a conical friction surface on the member 23. The rods are normally maintained in central position, in which they bear in the holes only with their central enlarged portions 32<1>, by spring-loaded balls 33 engaging notches in the rods. As the member 27 is moved towards the member 23, the ring 35 first comes into engagement with the conical surface of the member 23. If the speeds of the two members differ, torque is transmitted through the friction surfaces, tending to produce synchronisation but causing the rods 32 to be wedged in the holes, thus preventing further axial movement of the member 27. Upon the occurence of synchronism, the wedging action ceases and the member 27 can then be moved further to effect clutch engagement. During such further movement, an enlarged end portion 32<11> of each rod passes into the hole 31, and the balls 33 ride out of the notches in the rods, thus releasing pressure from the friction surfaces. In the four-speed gear box shown, the rods 32 in the double clutch member 27 splined on the driven shaft 11 have a friction ring at each end, co-operating respectively with a conical friction surface on the member 23 integral with the driving shaft 3 and with a conical friction surface 25 on the third-speed gear wheel 10 loosely mounted on the shaft 11. Similar rods 42 arranged in holes in a splined clutch member 15, which also acts as the first-speed gear wheel, carry at one end a conical friction ring 44 co-operating with a conical friction surface on the loose second-speed gear wheel 13, while the other end co-operates with an abutment 45 carried by the shaft 11.
