Facilitating changing speed. - Variable-speed gearing comprising a driving-member 302, Fig. 2, an intermediate member 304, and a driven member 308 has an arresting-clutch arranged between the intermediate and driven members to facilitate speed change. The members 302, 304 may be driving and driven members of the main clutch of a motor-vehicle and 308 the shaft driven through a countershaft 311 or through a clutch 317. The arresting-clutch is in the form of a conical collar 327 on the shaft 308, which is slid to the left so that thrust is transmitted to the member 304 to disengage it from the member 302. Action between the collar 327 and clutch pinion 306 tends to bring the member 304, the countershaft and the shaft 308 to similar speeds. In this arrangement, a service brake 321 may be applied by the continued sliding movement of the shaft 308. In a construction shown in Fig. 1, the main clutch 9 is of the multiple-disc type. When the clutch is disengaged, a dise 16 turning with the intermediate member 21 is thrust against a clutch disc 29 secured to the driven shaft 22.
