Abstract

421,778. Friction clutches. WACH, H., 57, Seestrasse, Kilchberg, near Zurich, Switzerland. May 17, 1934, No. 14951. Convention date, May 17, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] In friction clutches immersed in a fluid and for use between parts which are adapted to run at different speeds through alternative transmission when the clutch is open, after declutching, one of the members is disengaged from its shaft, preferably by the axial movement of the parts of a claw clutch. The invention is especially intended to be used in conjunction with hydraulic clutches, e.g. in the F÷ttinger gear, as described in Specification 409,378, [Group XXIX]. In that case the friction clutch is outside the casing of the transmission gear, but when constructed according to the present invention may be located inside without producing objectionable eddies in the contained liquid. The clutch comprises a disc x splined to the turbine runner b and adapted to be clamped by springs v between a member w fast with the ribbed part l<1> of the casing l and thus with the shaft z, and a member w<1> positively driven by the shaft z through the left hand part of the casing, but slidable axially in the casing. To disengage the clutch a rod t, inside the driven shaft y, is pushed by a pedal against a ring s upon the periphery of which rests a lever r. As the lever r rides up the bevel s<1> it presses upon the member w<1>, and removes the pressure of the springs v. When the lever r rests on the cylindrical part s<11> of the ring, the clutch rod and pedal are relieved of thrust. In order that the disc x may rotate with the members w, w and so avoid eddies, it is coupled with the runner b by a claw coupling g, Fig. 2, and is formed with a flange h, engaging a flange i on the member w<1>, which when it moves to the left, takes with it the disc x and disengages the coupling g. In a modified construction, Fig. 3, in which only a slight movement of the springs is required, a flanged sleeve or bush o is interposed between the disc and runner and splined to the disc. When the ring a moves to the left a dog k fast on the ring engages the bush and disengages the coupling g to free the disc. A spring m is provided between the disc and bush to close the coupling g prior to the action of the springs v.
