Abstract
182,196. Ramsay, D. M. March 24, 1921. Clutches. friction; gearing for stopping and starting machinery. -An aircraft has a forward driving propeller 21 which is keyed to a sleeve 19 carrying a clutch member 19, and a retarding propeller 23 which is keyed to a sleeve 22 carrying a clutch member 17. A clutch member 14 has conical surfaces 15, 16 for engagement with the members 17, 18 by axial movements on the driving shaft 12 to which it is keyed. The clutches may be controlled by fluid pressure from a sector-shaped valve 29, which admits steam &c. to either side of a piston 25. The clutch may be normally held in its inoperative position by springs 35, 36.
