Abstract
564,638. Friction clutches. WILSON, W. G. Jan. 26, 1943, No. 1313. [Class 80 (ii)] When in driving engagement one side of a clutch disc a is actuated upon by fluid pressure.and the other side is actuated upon by a like fluid not under pressure whereby the centrifugal force of the pressure fluid is counteracted. As shown, the clutch disc a is slidably splined to a driven shaft b and has a duct f communicating with a supply duct h for low pressure oil. A piston l, mounted in a driving casing c, has an axial duct l<1> and is spaced from the.disc a by a spring m. A weaker spring n is positioned at the other side of the disc a. Oil outlet holes e, p are provided in the casing c. To engage the clutch, oil under pressure is admitted through a duct o to act on the piston l which moves to the right and causes light clutching contact of the clutch faces and so closes the holes e. The duct l<1> then communicates with the chamber portion a<3> of the casing c so that the fluid pressure acts on the whole left side of the disc a. Also the duct f communicates with the right hand chamber portion g of the casing c through a duct f<1> so that the chamber portion g fills with oil, excess overflowing through the hole p situated near the clutch axis. The annular piston l may be replaced by a number of small pistons arranged around the clutch axis. In a modification, the piston l is formed on the casing 'c, the corresponding cylinder being formed in the clutch disc, clutch disengagement being facilitated by spring means, or by the action of low pressure oil on the end of the hub of the clutch disc.
