637,236. Disc brakes; cooling brakes. HOBBS TRANSMISSION, Ltd., and HOBBS, H. F. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35438. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a fluid-actuated clutch, comprising engine fly-wheel 10 carrying back - plate 11, pressure plate 18, heat insulator plate 19, flexible diaphragm 20 and clutch-plate 17 splined to driven shaft 16, sinuous grooves 55 are formed by ribs 56 on the rear face of the pressure plate for conveying oil over the surface of the pressure plate for cooling purposes. On opening a control valve 26, oil from a pump 25 is supplied under pressure through duct 27, annular grooves 28, 29, ducts 30, 31, 32 to a valve chamber 33 containing a valve member 35. The oil pressure overcomes the effect of centrifugal force and that of the spring 36, and the valve moves inwards allowing the oil to enter the diaphragm chamber through a port 34 and cause engagement of the clutch. Another valve chamber 43 contains a valve member 46 urged inwardly by a spring 47, and with the valve in this position, the oil exhausts through port 44, ducts- 49, 50, 51, 52, to the interior of the housing to ensure an oil supply to the friction surfaces during disengagement as described in Specifications 628,499 and 637,251, [both in Group XXIV]. At speed higher than normal, valve member 46 moves outward under centrifugal action, and closes the port 44. The oil from the duct 52 also enters the grooves 55 between pressure plate 18 and heat insulator plate 19, and the flow of oil is effected by centrifugal action. The pump 25 may be connected with further drillings similar to those at 27 whereby oil is fed to the grooves 55 when the clutch is disengaged. The invention may be applied to a brake.
