Abstract

695,987. Friction clutches. HINDMARCH, T. July 11, 1951 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4654/51. Class 80 (ii). A pressure liquid operated clutch has channel means for effecting continuous flow via the interengaging friction surfaces while the clutch is in operation to facilitate cooling of the parts. Clutch discs b, b', slidably splined to a shaft a have V-grooved faces engagable with corresponding grooves in an outer clutch member e which may be formed as a gear wheel and is mounted on bearings g. Pressure liquid from a channel in the shaft a passes to a chamber c between the discs b, b' to engage the clutch and to chambers f, f<SP>1</SP> to disengage the clutch. Annular grooves h are formed at the bases of the V-grooves. Those in the member e are connected by axial holes i to the exterior and those in the inner members b, b' are connected by radial passages which lead to passages l, m in the member e to the outside. The inner clutch members b, b' also have additional ducts o leading from the chamber c to the clutch faces, such ducts o being connected by radial ducts p leading to passages k, l, m in the member e. A leak duct n leading from the chamber c prevents the effect of centrifugal force from hampering clutch disengagement.
