Abstract

609,550. Clutches. CHAPMAN, C. W. March 15, 1946, No. 8151. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a centrifugally-acting clutch, brake or coupling, the friction shoes 17, Fig. 1, are pivotally attached at 20 to the outer ends of arms 15 which are resiliently pivoted to a driving boss 11 by pins 14 and rubber or other resilient bushes 13. The arms 15 are arranged to extend outwardly and forwardly in the direction of rotation so that a wedging action takes place on engagement of the shoes with the surface of the driven or fixed drum 12. Springs 21 for returning the shoes are arranged between adjacent arms 15 or between the arms or shoes and the driving boss 17, and means may be provided for varying the tension of such springs. Resilient bushes 19 for the mounting of the shoes 17 on the arms 15 may also be used. In modified arrangements the arms 15 are resiliently mounted on the driving boss by bonded rubber blocks instead of bushes and auxiliary cam means are provided for bringing the shoes into engagement with the friction surface at low speeds, as may be required, by manual operation. In the arrangement of Figs. 6 and 7, shown as a vehicle clutch, but which may also be adapted as a brake, the arms 37 are pivotally mounted through rubber bushes 38 on an engine flywheel 33 and the friction shoes 17 adapted to engage with a driven drum 12 are mounted on the arms 37 through short toggle links 42 having rubber bushes 43, 47. Each link 42 is provided with a balance weight 44 for the shoe 17, which acts to tend to straighten the toggle formed by the link 42 and its arm 37 against the frictional driving thrust. This moves an inner end 39 of the arm 37 against a spring 40 into engagement with the boss 11 and thus limits the bursting effect on the drum 12. The drum 12 is provided with a flange 50 faced with friction material and adapted to be pressed against the face of the flywheel by a pedal 51 to enable the engine to be used as a brake.
