Abstract

444,009. Friction clutches. ROESCH, G. H., 5, Garlinge Road, Cricklewood, and TALBOT, Ltd., C., Barlby Road, Ladbroke Grove, both in London. Sept. 11, 1934, No. 22505/33. [Class 80 (ii)] A centrifugal friction clutch for a motor vehicle comprises friction shoes 13 pivotally mounted on the driving (or driven) member and engageable, under the control of their own centrifugal force or of a separate centrifugal governor, with the driven (or driving) member, the free end of each shoe being connected by a link 7 with an idler sleeve 23 so that the shoes are all constrained to move to the same extent. Retracting springs 30 act between the bottom of chambers 25 in the shoes and nuts 29 threaded on rods 27, which extend through the shoes and are pivotally connected to the sleeve 23. An over-riding hand control may be provided. As shown, the shoes 13 are pivoted at their trailing end on a carrier 12 secured, with a drum 8, to the engine shaft 10, and coact with a drum 15 secured to a member 18 integral with a sleeve 19 splined on the gear-box input shaft 9. The sleeve 23 freely encircles the drum 8. The periphery of the member 18 is formed with facets 20 between which and the drum 8 are disposed spring-pressed rollers 21 forming a one-way clutch which is in parallel with the centrifugal clutch and which acts to prevent the shaft 9 from overrunning the shaft 10. Bearing rollers 39 are arranged between the drum 8 and cylindrical parts of member 18. Alternatively a one-way clutch may be arranged in series with the centrifugal clutch ; or the latter may be used in combination with a fluid flywheel; or two centrifugal clutches may be used, the shoes of one being connected to the driving shaft while the shoes of the other are connected to the driven shaft.
