Clutches, free-wheel; facilitating changing speed; gearing for stopping and starting machinery.-Relates to a coupling-device comprising two oppositely-acting unidirectional clutches, one of which may be thrown out of action, and consists in the use of two sets of roller wedging-elements disposed in parallel planes, both sets coacting with a driving-element or a driven element having working-surfaces which are surfaces of revolution; it further consists in means for preventing or limiting simultaneous strains in the two clutches, and in various improvements chiefly directed to the application of the device between the gear-box and road-wheels of a motor-vehicle, in order to facilitate speed-changing. The constructions described are identical with those described in the abridgment of Specification 288,094, with the following exceptions :- In the construction described with reference to Figs. 1 (24922/27), 1b (24922/27), 3 (24922/27), and 4 (24922/27) of Specification 288,094, the lever x may have a retaining catch; the forward rollers may alternatively be urged into engagement by springs acting on the cage h<2>; and reference to the use of the engine as a brake is omitted. In the construction described with reference to Fig. 1 (24923/27), 1a (24923/27), 5 (24923/27), 6 (24923/27), and 7 (24923/27) of Specification 288,094, reference to the undercutting of the parts 21, 22 is omitted. Figs. 8c (Comp.), 10 (Comp.), 12 (Comp.), and 13 (Comp.), of Specification 288,094 and the description relating thereto are omitted, but the use of adjustable brakes on both the driving and driven ends of the gear-box is included. It is further stated that the driving and driven clutch members are interchangeable, provided that the brake always acts on the driving clutch member. The second Provisional Specification includes the additional subject-matter appearing in the second Provisional Specification of Specification 288,094, but the use of a resilient liner described in the fourth Provisional Specification of Specification 288,094 does not appear.
