Abstract

Free-wheel gearing, - A change-speed gear of the selector-gear type is provided with an over-running clutch between the driving and driven shafts on the top gear or direct drive only, the drive being positive in both directions on the lower gears and reverse. Thus the engine can be used as a brake on the lower gears and the vehicle can coast down hills on the top gear. The direct drive is obtained by sliding a gear wheel 4 splined on the driven shaft 2 into engagement with an internally-toothed clutch member 1<b> carried by the driving shaft 1. This clutch member instead of being fixed on the shaft is connected thereto by a one-way friction clutch comprising spring-pressed rockers 16 which are carried in recesses 15 in a boss 14 fixed on the shaft 1 and engage a hardened ring 18 secured to the member 1<b>. Annular plates 20, 21 keep the member 1<b> in position on the boss 14. The indirect gears and the reverse are obtained in the ordinary way through a lay-shaft 5 and a pinion 7 fixed on the driving shaft 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 164,426.
