Abstract
475,328. Epicyclic change-speed gear- - ing. ALVIS, Ltd., and CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-. May 11, 1937, No. 13348. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to change-speed gearing for motorvehicles comprising a one-way clutch connection 8 between driving and driven shafts 1, 3 and an alternative connection through a planetary overdriving train 6, 7, 4. The planets 7 are carried by the shaft 1, preferably the tail shaft of a gear-box, the annulus 4 by the shaft 3, and the sun 6 is adapted to be positively clutched alternatively to a fixed member 16, for the geared drive, and to the driven gear 4, for solid drive without freewheeling, by a synchromesh device 14 which has an intermediate free position. The synchromesh device shown comprises a spring ball 20 in a splined wheel 9 which engages a recess 21 in a control toothed muff 14 so as to cause a braking action between cones 11a, 12a to slow down the muff 14 so that its teeth engage fixed teeth 16 without shock. The same ball 20 and recess 21 cause the muff teeth to engage clutching teeth 16<1> without shock.
