Abstract

492,003. Change - speed gearing. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AKT.- GES. Nov. 2, 1937, No. 29994. Convention date, April 27. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing, particularly for motorvehicles, providing three forward speeds and one overdrive, between a driving shaft 6 and a parallel driven shaft 1, includes an overdrive pair 5, 4.located adjacent the lowest speed pair 31, 3, these two ratios being controlled respectively by a claw-sleeve 7 splined on the driving shaft 1, and a claw-sleeve 10 splined on the loosely-mounted driving sleeve of a free-wheel clutch 13, on which sleeve the low-speed pinion 3 is freely mounted and through which it imparts a unidirectional drive to the driven shaft 1 when clutched by the claw sleeve 10. The claw sleeves 7, 10 have an interlocking tongue and groove 7<1>, 9, so that they always move axially together and are controlled by a common fork. Second- and third-speed pairs 14, 17 and 15, 18 are controlled by frictionally synchronized claw-clutches 16. By virtue of the free-wheel 13 in low-speed, the gear can, if traffic conditions necessitate the vehicle being brought almost to a stop, be changed directly from any ratio to the lowest ratio after merely closing the engine-throttle and without mainclutch manipulation, so that the vehicle is prepared for the subsequent get-away in lowest speed.
