Abstract
480,593. Motor - vehicle driving - gear. STEWART, C. E. Aug. 19, 1936, No. 22865. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] Automatic change-speed gear for motor vehicles comprises a driven axle 1, Fig. 3, a gearbox 8 for each road wheel, reduction gear between the axle and each wheel, and automatic clutches between the axle and each wheel adapted to cut out the reduction gear to provide a direct drive. The automatic clutches may be hydraulic couplings or centrifugal clutches. The engine A drives the axle shaft 1 through a clutch B and gearing D. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 one-way clutches are provided between the axle 1 and each wheel so that either wheel can overrun the axle. Reversing gear is also provided in each gear-box 8. The axle shaft 1 is coupled by a one-way clutch 12 to a sleeve 10 which drives the road wheel 44 through reduction gear 11, 20 and 31, 42, a one-way clutch 23 being provided so that gear 31 and its sleeve 30 can over-run the gear 20. A sleeve 5, driven from sleeve 10 at the same speed through gears 11, 20 and 21, 50, is splined to the driving member 6 of an hydraulic coupling the driven member 46 being fixed to the road wheel. A cone clutch member 7 adapted to engage a coned surface 45 on the wheel 44 is slidably mounted on the sleeve 5 under control of a spring 71 and sloping clutch teeth 70, 60 formed respectively on the cone 7 and the member 6. When the engine starts to drive the vehicle, the drive is transmitted to the wheel through the double reduction gears 11, 20 and 31, 42, the driving member 6 of the hydraulic clutch over-running the driven member 46 fixed to the road wheel. As the speed increases the hydraulic clutch gradually takes up the drive and drives the wheel at an increasing gear ratio, the sleeve 30 now over-running the gear 20. Finally the sloping clutch teeth 60, 70 cause the cone member 7 to be moved axially until it engages the surface 45 and couples the sleeve 5' and member 6 directly to the wheel. For reverse gear the sleeve 30 is slid along its shaft 3 until gear 31 is disengaged from gear 42 and engages with an idler 9 integral with a gear 9a in permanent mesh with gear 42. In reverse gear the sleeve 5 and hydraulic clutch member 6 are not driven, the gear 21 being disengaged from gear 50.
