Abstract
496,727. Motor-cycle driving-gear. COVENTRY-EAGLE CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and WOODMAN, A. C. June 2, 1937, No. 15277. [Class 79 (ii)] A one-way clutch provided between the pedal shaft and the engine of a motor-cycle is adapted to be connected or disconnected at will to and from one member of a main clutch incorporated in the engine drive, so that the cycle can be driven by the pedals, without turning the engine and without disengaging the main or friction clutch. The driving gear is of the kind described in Specification 475,894 in which the pedal shaft and engine shaft are not co-axial and the cycle can overrun both the engine shaft and the pedal shaft. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the pedal shaft a drives the cycle through a one-way clutch h, a chain-wheel f, and a chain drive to the rear wheel (not shown). The engine shaft carries a worm j driving the chain wheel f through a worm-wheel k, friction clutch d, double reduction gear e, and a one-way clutch i. The pedal shaft a is normally connected to the engine through a one-way clutch m and a disconnectible dog-clutch n<1>, but when one member n of the dog-clutch is slid to the left to disengage it from the other member o the pedal shaft is quite free of the engine shaft and drives the cycle only. In a modification the pedal shaft is slidable axially to connect and disconnect the one-way clutch m to and from a member d<1> of the main clutch.
