Abstract

1,237,643. Variable-speed gearing. HAYTERS Ltd. 16 March, 1970 [10 April, 1969], No. 18477/69. Heading F2D. A two-speed C.S.G. for driving the roller 10 of a power-operated lawn-mower comprises an electric or I.C. engine driven shaft 11 which drives through a spring-engaged manually released dog clutch 13 to a gear input shaft 12 on which sprockets 18 and 19 are mounted freely and via a one-way sprag clutch 22 respectively, the sprockets 18, 19 being connected via chains 26, 27 to a lay-shaft 30 in turn connected to the roller 10 via sprockets 31, 33 and a chain 32. -In first (low) speed (Fig. 1), the input shaft 12 drives through the one-way clutch 22 to the sprocket 19 which drives the roller 10 via chains 27, 32 &c. as above, the sprocket 18 freely rotating on the shaft 12. The second (high) speed (Fig. 2) is provided by axially sliding the sprocket 18, via a manual gear selector 25 and lever arm 24, into engagement with a dog-clutch peg 23 on the input 12, whereby the sprocket 18 drives the roller via chains 26, 32 &c. and the sprocket 19 overruns on the one-way spray clutch 22. It is stated that more than two-speeds can be obtained by using for example three sprockets diminishing progressively in size, the second and third of which are fitted with sprag clutches.
