Abstract

660,998. Variable-speed gearing. LONGLEY, R. G. Feb. 8, 1950 [June 8, 1948], No. 15470/48. Class 80 (ii) A change speed gear for an automatic lathe is adapted to give four forwards speeds by the operation of clutches 1 and K on the driven and driving shafts H and C respectively. The clutch member K is slidably keyed to the driving shaft C and adapted to engage either with a sprocket L, connected by a chain or belt T with a member 2 on the driven shaft H, or with a member M which is coupled by gearing P', P<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>1</SP> to the member L and drives through gearing Q<SP>1</SP>, N, V, W a sprocket O connected by chain or belt U to a member 3 on the shaft H. Thus different speeds of the sprockets L, O are obtained for each position of the clutch member K and the drive of shaft H is taken from either sprocket by means of the clutch member 1 to give four speeds. For operation as described a pick-off gear X is removed whilst the gear V is engaged. By removing gear V and replacing gear X the sprocket O is driven in a reverse direction and two forward and two reverse speeds are obtained. A reversing device for the driving motor 4 may also be employed.
