Abstract

650,066. Variable-speed control. QUEENSMERE PROPERTIES & INVESTMENTS, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1948, No. 4764. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group V] An arrangement for co-ordinating the speed of a moving cutting-wire 38 in a brick-cutting machine (see Group V) with the speed of a travelling column of clay through which the wire cuts is disposed as follows:-The wire is moved by a shaft 56 via pulleys 62, 64 and jockey loaded belt 60, shaft 58, gear box 84 and other connections. The shaft 58 carries a worm 68 meshing with worm wheel 70 on shaft 72 which carries a worm wheel 74 meshing with worm 76 on a shaft 78. Shaft 78 carries a disc 80 which bears in driven relationship against the face of a disc 82 driven by the rear roller 16 of belt 14. Belt 14 receives the clay column and is frictionally driven thereby. The clay column thus drives worm 76. Belt 60 tends to drive worm wheel 74 at a certain speed, but worm wheel 74 is restrained by worm 76, the speed of which is governed by that of the clay column. Belt 60 therefore slips to an extent governed by the clay column speed. This belt may be replaced by a non-slipping V-belt or chain running over sprockets, in which case a slipping clutch, preferably a hydraulic coupling, is used. The disc 80 is splined on the shaft 78, and by adjusting the disc radially the length of the pieces cut from the column is adjusted.
