Abstract

1,259,715. Variable-speed friction gear. P. W. BOND. 9 Dec., 1970 [10 Dec., 1969], No. 60230/69. Heading F2D. A continuously variable friction gear for lathes, drills and other machine tools comprises a conoid 15 fast on an input shaft 13 and engaged by the resilient rim 24a of a friction wheel 24 slidably keyed fast on an intermediate shaft 22 carried by a member 20a which pivots at 20, in a fixed frame 10, under the control of a manually operated lever 26, the friction wheel 24 being spring loaded into engagement with the conoid 15 by a spring 25 arranged at one end of the intermediate shaft 22, the other end of the shaft 22 being connected to an output shaft 28 via pulleys 23, 29 and a belt 30. Alternatively the shaft 22 may be directly connected to a flexible driven shaft (not shown). A roller 16 freely mounted on the drive shaft 13, provides a neutral position for cessation of drive when engaged by the friction wheel 24.
