560,941. Variable - speed gearing. KENWORTHY, J. M. Oct. 23, 1942, No. 14867. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable-speed gearing comprises a belt 15 connecting stepped pulleys 13, 14, on shafts 10, 11, the flanges between adjacent steps of each pulley having oppositely disposed passageways a, A, so that the belt may be moved from one step to the next when changing gear. The belt-shifting device comprises a spring-pressed pulley 16 engaging the belt 15 and guide rollers 25, all mounted on side cheeks 20 of a base 211 which is guided by a groove 23 in a base plate 22, the direction of the groove 23 corresponding with the angle of the stepped pulleys. The belt shifter is moved by a lever 24 which is pivoted at 26 and is engageable with notches in a plate 32. Pulley 14 is loose on the shaft 11 and has integral therewith a pulley 39 connected by a belt 41 to a pulley 42 on a countershaft 40. The latter has a second pulley 44 connected by a belt 45 with a pulley 43 loose on the shaft 11. Either pulley 14, 43, may be clutched to the shaft 11 by actuation of a lever 47 ; thus two speeds may be obtained for each setting of the main belt 15. The shaft 10 is driven by a belt 38 from a motor 12. The shafts 10, 40, may be adjusted by screw and slot means 52, 53, for adjusting the tensions of the belts.
