Abstract

462,625. Variable - speed gearing. CROFT, A. Dec. 10, 1935, Nos. 34142 /35 and 5983/36. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed driving pulleys of variable effective diameter for receiving V-shaped driving belts are made up of a number of discs 2 slidably mounted upon a driving or driven shaft A, or sleeve member B secured thereto, and having one face perpendicular to the axis of the shaft and the other inclined, these discs being arranged in pairs with the inclined surfaces of each pair facing each other to receive the belt C. The left-hand discs of the pairs of discs are coupled together by bolts 5 and spacing sleeves 6 and the right-hand discs are also coupled together in a similar manner. The left-hand set of discs is actuated by screwing the ring 7 along the member B which ring engages the heads of the bolts 5 and moves them axially together with the discs secured thereto. This axial movement is transmitted, by the ends S of the bolts 5, to bolts carrying the right-hand set of discs through links 8 pivotally mounted on the member B. Thus a simultaneous and equal movement of the sets of discs in opposite directions is obtained to decrease or increase the distance between the pairs of inclined surfaces and so increase or decrease the effective diameter of the pulley, the centre of each belt always remaining in the same plane. Instead of the screwed ring 9 an axially sliding ring or collar may be used to move the discs, and the motion from one set of discs to the other may be transmitted by racks through intermediate gears.
