Abstract

315,970. Martin, P. S., and Devlin, J. June 22, 1928. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises a disc D, Fig. 1, with rings of recesses E, F, G engaged by gear members each having a ring of balls P in place of the usual teeth. The balls P may be kept from falling out by an encircling mask W, Fig. 2, or by the wheel itself being in two halves gripping the larger half of each ball. There are three ball-tooth gears I, J, K loose on a driving-shaft R, and one such gear H loose on an aligned driven shaft T, and suitable clutches A, B, C. For forward speeds, the gear H is clutched to shaft T, and gears I, J, K are alternatively clutched to shaft R. For reversed driving, the gear K is clutched to shaft T and gear I to shaft R.
