Abstract
161,254. West, C. A. Jan. 2, 1920. Variable-speed friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicles comprises a driving-shaft A and a parallel shaft D geared thereto each carrying two or more separately movable bevel friction pinions such as B, C and E, F adapted to grip between them in pairs gear surfaces upon a wheel M upon a perpendicular driven shaft L. The wheel M is preferably loose on the shaft L and other loose wheels M<1>, M<2> driven together in the reverse direction are arranged outside the pinions. Clutches N, N<1>movable together may be arranged for connecting the forward and reversed drives respectively. The wheels may be supported by idlers S.
