5151. Holliday, C. E. Feb. 28. Variable-speed chain gearing comprises a driving-shaft a, a driven shaft c, and an intermediate shaft b, and two chains m, n embracing pairs of wheels k, g and l, h on the shafts a, c and engaging the outsides of the corresponding wheels d, e on the shaft b. The wheels k, l may be alternatively clutched to the shaft a by a sliding member having clutch teeth 6, 5. The wheels g, h may be alternatively clutched to the shaft c by a like member having clutch teeth 8, 7. Thus the shaft c may be driven at four different speeds, for two of which power passes along the shaft b between the gears d, e. Reversed driving is obtainable through an additional pair of gears f, i and a clutch 10. A clutch may be interposed between the gears e, d to allow a chain that is not working to be at rest. The clutches are operated by a laterally-sliding finger u which engages a set of rods 1 &c., two at a time. Specification 17,757/12 is referred to.
