10,347. Lamplough, F., and Buckingham, W. R. April 28. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-Relates to variable-speed gearing of the kind in which the divided axle carrying the differential gear is driven at various speeds by toothed wheels from a transverse countershaft which is driven from a longitudinal shaft by bevel-gearing. This gearing is provided with reversing- gearing of improved construction and with controlling- mechanism therefor. The longitudinal shaft d', Fig. 1, drives the transverse countershaft b by bevel-gearing d<2>, e, and the two highest forward speeds are obtained by sliding toothed wheels f<1>, f<2> on the countershaft alternately into engagement with toothed wheels n, n<1> secured to an extension of the casing of the differential gear. The slow forward speed is obtained by a pinion g<1>, shown also in Fig. 2, engaging a large toothed wheel i on the differential casing. The reverse is obtained by sliding the pinion g<1> out of mesh with the wheel i, and simultaneously sliding a pair of reversing toothed wheels h, h<1> in the opposite direction, until they mesh respectively with the toothed wheels g<1>, i. The pinion g<1> and the pair of reversing-wheels are adjusted simultaneously in opposite directions by connecting them respectively with slides j, k, Fig. 3, having rack teeth which gear with opposite sides of a pinion l, one of the slides or the pinion being adjusted by the controlling-mechanism.
