Abstract

178,435. Penrod, W. F. April 15, 1921, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed gearing has helical teeth throughout and a double bevel self-compensation drive to a wheel R<1> which may be mounted on the differential of a vehicle. Bevel gears P', P<2> meshing with the wheel R<1> on opposite sides are secured to an intermediate shaft S<2> and to a countershaft S' respectively, and are connected by a constantly-meshing pair g<1>, g<2>. The power is equally distributed between the bevel gears by suitable means such as by allowing the shaft S<2> longitudinal play. A driving-shaft S<1> is in line with the shaft S<2>, and about their meeting ends is mounted a loose gear g<3> which may drive or be driven from a gear g<4> secured to a sleeve S<4> loose on the countershaft. A gear g<5> fast on the shaft S<1> meshes with a gear g<6> loose on the shaft S<3>. In each operative position, end thrusts are balanced by the helices of the working gears. A drive direct to the divided transmission is obtained by connecting the gear g<3> to both the shafts S', S<2> by clutches c<1>, c<2>. A higher speed is effected by driving the shaft S' through the single pair g<3>, g<4> as shown in Fig. 3, a clutch c<3> being used. A lower speed is effected by using the pair g<5>, g<6> alone with a clutch c'. The lowest speed is a double reduction obtained as shown in Fig. 2. In reversed driving, power passes from a gear g<7> through an idler g' to a gear g<8>, and through the reducing pair g<4>, g'. There are main roller bearings b<1>, b<2>, Fig. 1, and a thrust bearing e. The abutting ends of the shafts S<1>, S<2> carry fast upon them steel discs d separated by hard independent rollers d<2> constituting a thrust bearing so that the shafts move longitudinally together. The bearing is enclosed between washers d<1> and two parts in which the gear g<3> is made.
