Abstract

180,925. Raleigh Cycle Co., Ltd., and Wilkie, W. July 5, 1921. Variable-speed gearing for motor vehicles of the kind comprising gears C, E, B on a main shaft A constantly meshing with gears H, J, G on a lay-shaft F, the pair E, J being formed also as clutch members and being laterally movable together to change the speed, is modified to effect reversed driving by arranging that one gear G on the lay-shaft is disconnected from the other two on that shaft and is connected through a pair of idlers L, M with the middle gear E on the main shaft. The gear L is always in mesh with the gear G, and, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the reversed drive is produced when the pair E, J is slid to the extreme left into the plane of the fixed gear M. The drive is then through the train A, B, G, L, M, E, J, H, C. The next position to the right causes the loose gear H to be connected through a splined sleeve H<2> and the gear J to clutch dogs F<1> on the shaft F. The low forward speed is then through the train A, B, G, F, J, H, C. The next movement to the right brings the gear E into clutch engagement at C<2> with a long sleeve C<1> to which the driven gear C is secured, the gear J remaining in engagement with the dogs F<1>. The second speed is then through the train A, B, G, F, J, E, C'. The next movement causes the gear E to connect dogs B<2> on the shaft A to the clutch C<2> for a direct drive. In a modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the gear M is loose on its shaft K, meshes constantly with the gear E, and moves laterally with it. The reverse gear is then produced in the extreme right-hand position when the gear M is locked to the gear L by clutch teeth L', M<1>. In both forms, a kick starter may be applied to the end of a sleeve N on the lay-shaft.
