Abstract
182,719. Downs, N. T., and Dyke, C. H. Sept. 3, 1921. Variable-speed gearing comprises six gears arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the middle pair 4, 9 being always in mesh and being movable independently, the gear 4 to produce the highest and lowest speeds, and the countershaft gear 9 to produce the middle of the three speeds. The gea.r 4, which has clutch ends 22, 23 is splined on a driving-shaft 2 and carries loose upon it a driven sleeve 28 with gear 6 and a pinion 5 meshing with a large wheel 8 fast upon the countershaft 3. Another gear 7 fast upon the shaft 3 meshes with the gear 6. The highest speed is a direct drive obtained by sliding the gear 4 to the right into clutch engagement with the sleeve 28. The lowest speed is obtained by sliding the gear 4 to the left into clutch engagement with the pinion 5 when the drive passes through the train 4, 5, 8, 7, 6. For the middle speed, the gear 4 is brought to neutral, and the gear 9, which is loose on the shaft 3, is brought into clutch engagement with the wheel 8. The drive then passes through the train 4, 9, 8, 7, 6. Operation is effected by forks 10, 11, Fig. 4, having bearing sleeves 10<a>, 11<a> surrounding an operating cam shaft 12. Studs 10<c>, 11<c> engage grooves 10<b>, 11<b> in the shaft 12, the grooves being formed as shown in Fig. 5, to give the required independent movements to the forks 10, 11.
