Variable-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 3, 6, Fig. 1, a parallel countershaft 20, and a sliding gear element 15 supported upon an eccentric drum 12 secured to the gear casing 1. The eccentric slider 15 has internal teeth 16 always in mesh with a long pinion 4 fast on shaft 1, drum 12 being gapped at 12<a>, Fig. 2, to allow this. A direct-driving clutch 10 splined on shaft 6 is connected by a flange 32 to a groove in slider 15 so as to slide with the latter. Countershaft 20 is constantly driven through pair 4, 21. To obtain direct drive or fourth speed from neutral position of Fig. 1, slider 15 is moved to the right to engage clutch members 10, 11. To bring in third speed from neutral, slider 15 is' moved to the left to bring gear 17 upon it into mesh with internal teeth 18 on gear 27 fast on shaft 6. To bring in second speed from neutral, a slider 22 loose on shaft 20 is moved to the left so as to bring a gear 23 into mesh with a gear 24 on slider 15, and a pinion 25 into mesh with gear 27. For lowest speed, slider 22 is moved to the right into clutch engagement at 28 with gear 21, while a pinion 25<1> meshes with the gear 27. Reverse driving may be effected by connecting gears 21, 27 by idlers 37, 38, Fig. 2; sliding on a second countershaft 35. The three sliding gear sets may be operated through a fork 29, and levers 33, 39 from selector bars engaged singly by control lever 30.
