Abstract

Variable-speed toothed gearing comprises a double clutch 7 slidable on a driving-shaft 4 and a like clutch 12 slidable on a driven shaft 8, by means of which four speed ratios are obtained. Loose gears 5, 6, which can be alternatively clutched to the shaft 4 by the clutch 7, mesh constantly with gears 14, 15 fast upon a parallel shaft 13. Loose gears 10, 11 meshing with the gears 14, 15, respectively, can be engaged alternatively by the clutch 12. Two speeds are produced by moving the clutches 7, 12 together in the one and in the other direction, and two other speeds are produced by moving these clutches in opposite directions. In the latter cases, power passes along the shaft 13. The clutches 7, 12 can be operated by a lever adapted to turn about two different axes. Other speeds and reversed driving can be obtained by employing additional gears. The invention may be used on motor-vehicles, when the shaft 4 may be actuated through a sprocket 1 and plate clutch, as described in Specification 6606/12. A starter 28, 29 may be applied to the shaft 4.
