23,519. Doherty, J., and D. H. K. Motor Cycle Specialities Co. Oct. 15. Variable-speed toothed g e a r i n g comprising spring-pin clutches, such as are shown in Fig. 1, is controlled by a sliding cam plate p, Fig. 2. A driving-shaft a carries fixed gears j, k meshing with gears h, g loose on a countershaft f. A gear e fast on the shaft f meshes with a gear d, which is connected by a sleeve c, Fig. 1, to a transmitting - pulley b. A direct drive is imparted to the pulley b through a clutch member l, which slides on a feather on the shaft a and carries spring pins m adapted to engage recesses o in the side of the gear d. Reduced speeds are effected when the gears h, g are alternatively clutched to the shaft f. For this purpose, a member i sliding on a feather on the shaft f is adapted to be engaged by like spring pins projecting from the sides of these gears. The members l, i are operated in unison by pivoted levers s, s<1> which carry projections r, r', Fig. 2, engaging cam slots q, q' in the cam plate p. The gearing is specially suitable for motor-vehicles.
