Abstract

9604. Westinghouse, H. H., and Goodspeed, L. F. April 20. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In constant-mesh variablespeed gearing with multiple-disk friction clutches, the clutches are independently and successively brought into and retained in engagement by a continuous movement of a controlling-device. The driving-shaft 2 carries a housing 6, within which are three nested multiple-disk clutches, which are brought into engagement through spring rods, such as 14, and sets of levers 15. As a sleeve 35 is moved to the left, inclined surfaces such as 36 act on the sets of levers 15 &c. in succession, and so bring the clutches successively into engagement. The first clutch connects the housing 6 to a sleeve 32, which is connected by gearing 34, 47 and a ratchet clutch 100 to a conntershaft 42. The second clutch connects the housing 6 to a sleeve 19, which is connected by gearing 23, 48 and a ratchet clutch 101 to the shaft 42. The third clutch connects the housing 6 to the driven shaft 1 directly. The effect of the successive operation of the clutches is to drive the shaft 42 at one speed, then at a higher speed, and then to drive the shaft 1 only, the clutches 100, 101 overrunning. The shaft 42 carries a fixed gear 45 in mesh with a gear 46 loose on the shaft 1, and two forward reduced speeds are imparted to the shaft 1 by sliding a double clutch 49 to the right. Two corresponding reversed drives are effected through a train of loose gears 54, 55, 56 when clutches 49, 58 are slid to the left. The clutches 49, 58 are operated by way of rods 52, 78, Fig. 7, connected by links 85, 86, an equalizing-lever 84, and other link-work to the lower end of a looselypivoted lever 73, the upper end of which carries a notch 87. The disk clutches are operated by way of a lever 40 constantly connected to a hand-lever 62. When the lever 62 is opposite notches 67 in a quadrant 66, the disk clutches alone are being operated. When the lever 62 is opposite a plain part 68 of the quadrant, the clutches 49, 58 alone can be operated, and this is done by engaging the notch 87 by a latch 69 on the lever 62.
