Abstract

13,537. Gottl, A., and Loos, F. June 18, 1912, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed and chain gearing; clutches, friction.-Variable-speed gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, comprises a set of friction disks 9, 10, 11, 12, Fig. 1, adapted to be clutched singly to a driving-shaft 3, ratchet clutches being so arranged in combination with constant-mesh toothed or chain gearing that the gear pairs not transmitting power are at rest. The disk 9 is secured to a driven shaft 13 in line with the shaft 3. The disks 10, 11 are secured to sleeves 14, 15, which carry gears 25, 26, which mesh with gears 30, 32 loose on a countershaft 29 and connected thereto by ratchet clutches 31, 33. As the disks 11, 10, 9 are successively clutched to the shaft 3, the low, middle, and high speeds come into operation in turn, and either or both of the gear pairs 25, 30 and 26, 32 are allowed to be at rest by their ratchet clutches. The disk 12 is for reversed driving. It is connected by a sleeve 16 and suitable gearing to the gear 32, which is, for reversed driving, connected to the shaft 29 by a positive clutch 39. Each of the friction disks has a peripheral groove in which resides a pair of half-rings such as 12<1>, Fig. 2. These half-rings 12<1>, 11<1>, 10<1>, 9<1>, Fig. 1, always turn with a casing 1 secured to a flywheel 2 on the shaft 3, and are normally kept in the disengaged position by springs 12<11>, Fig. 2. A pair of half-rings is caused to grip the enclosed disk by two pairs of jaws 17 carried by rocking shafts 4. The pairs of jaws 17 are operated in unison through pairs of worm-wheel sectors 19, Fig. 1, worms 20, and pinions 22 when a rack sleeve 6 is moved longitudinally relatively to a frame 5 which supports the shafts 4 &c. To operate the gearing, the frame 5 is moved longitudinally by a rod 7 until the jaws 17 come .between the proper half, rings. An expanding spring 24 then moves the sleeve 6, contracts the jaws 17, and causes the disk to be gripped and driven. A projection 45 upon the rod 7 operates the clutch 39 when the disk 12 is to be gripped for reversed driving.
