Abstract

22,624. Stewart, R. M., and Williams, P. R. Oct. 7. Variable speed and reversing - gearing for motor-vehicles comprises alined driving and driven shafts c, g, and two parallel countershafts m, q, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, but really arranged as shown in Fig. 2. On the shafts c, m, q are three loose gears b, j, o, constantly in mesh. A double clutch d slides on a feather on the shaft g and is adapted to engage a clutch member c<1> on the end of the shaft c, or a member s on a sleeve e, which is loose on the shaft g and carries a pair of gears f, f<1>. A gear h slides on a feather on the shaft m and carries clutch teeth u adapted to engage teeth on the face of the gear j. A gear k, always in mesh with the gear f<1>, is loose on the shaft m and adapted to be connected to the gear j by a clutch v. A gear l secured to the shaft m is in constant mesh with the gear f. Other gears n, p, loose on the shaft q, mesh respectively with the gear h and with the gear f. For the first speed, the clutches s, u are engaged, and the gear b is connected to the shaft c by a clutch r. Power passes through the gears b, j, the shaft w, and the gears l, f. For the second speed, the clutch u is disengaged, and the gear o is slid so as to engage the gear n by a clutch w. Power passes through the gears b, j, o, n, h, the shaft m, and gears l, f. For the third speed, the clutch w is disengaged, and the clutch v connected up. Power then passes through the gears b, j, k, f<1>. The fourth speed is a direct drive obtained by connecting the clutch members d, c<1> alone. All the toothed gearing is then at rest. To effect reversed driving, the clutches r, s are engaged, and the gear o is slid so as to engage the gear p by a clutch x. Power then passes through the gears b, j, o, p, f. The clutches on the shafts c, g are operated by a rod t<1> and springs z.
