Abstract

358,177. Variable speed gearing. WILDMAN, F., 118, St. Paul's Road, Camden Town, London. July 28, 1930, No. 22652. [Class 80 (ii).] Continuously-variable toothed gearing varies automatically according to the load by the movement of spiral-toothed pinions 3 along in the spaces between driving and driven spiral-toothed cones 1, 2. Each pinion 3 turns on a, spigot B carried by a block 4 which slides on guide-bars 5 parallel to the cone surfaces. The gear may be changed by hand one way by disengaging the clutch 8 connecting cone 1 to driving-shaft 6. It may be changed the other way by disengaging the clutches 81 connecting the cones 2 to shafts 61 geared at 9, 10 to a driven shaft 10<1>. Each clutch comprises a sleeve 8 which disengages spring-expanded dogs 18 from indentations inside the cone, such sleeve being slightly coned externally to effect frictional engagement. The speed in operation at any time may be locked by turning crank shafts 12 from a Bowden wire 14. The blocks 4 carry friction grip devices which are expanded into engagement to clamp the block by such turning of the shaft 12 which passes through a block and grip device. A suitable reversing-gear is shown at 11.
