Abstract

Variable-speed gearing.-Speed changing in a variable-speed gear A, Fig. 2, is facilitated by the use of a separate auxiliary variable-speed gear a the latter being normally disconnected from the former and adapted to be set, while at rest, for the next speed change. The driving and driven shafts B, E of the gear A are connected by gearing C, G to corresponding shafts b, e, which are connectible to the gear a by clutches g, h. The gear a gives the same or nearly the same ratios as the gear A, and the gear a is set beforehand to give the ratio to which the gear A is to be changed. The clutches g, h are normally held out of action by cams H, J, Fig. 1, the former connected to the engine clutch N, the latter to the operating- lever 0 of the gear A, the arrangement being such that the clutches g, h cannot be engaged by their springs unless the clutch N is disengaged and the lever 0 is in neutral position. The invention is suitable for motor-vehicles.
