Abstract
236,613. Burgher, F. D. March 13, 1924. Variable-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises an arrangement by which the main shaft is reciprocated when the main clutch is disengaged and engaged, and a stop is interposed by a separate selector in the way of a returning clutch member to render the selected gear clutch operative. Driven and driving shafts 1, 2 of the speed gear are coupled so as to move longitudinally along with the movable member 20 of the main clutch. There is a lay shaft 2<a> and constant mesh pairs of toothed wheels. Each gear clutch comprises spring-separated members a, b which reciprocate with the combined main shaft 1, 2, the member a being fixed and the member b being adapted to be held against returning to the left as the main clutch is let in, by one of a set of sliding stops e. The member b of the direct-driving clutch 12 is splined on the end of the driving-shaft 2, and, when the direct, drive is in use, the toothed gearing is at rest. For two reduced speeds and reverse, one of the clutches 14, 15, or 16 is operated simultaneously with the operation of a clutch 13 for actuating the lay shaft. The stops e are normally held out of action by springs f and are thrust down into operative position in proper combinations by cams g on a shaft 26 turned by the selector.
