Abstract

263,319. Ahlm, C. E. F. Jan. 26, 1926. Variable-speed gearing of the kind comprising an external gear such as 11, Fig. 2, adapted to be moved in two directions to bring it selectively into mesh with a plurality of internal gears 13, 14, 15 is operated by means of an axially slidable bar 70, which carries a gear sector 74, Fig. 4, engaging a. sector 78 of different radius by which the supporting frame of the gear 11 is rocked. In the three-speed and reversing gear shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the shaft 6 of the gear 11 is driven through a link belt 43 from a driving-shaft 1 about which the frame 5 pivots. The gear 11 is enmeshed with an idler 90, Fig. 1, for reversed driving. In order that it may be meshed with a step of the internal cone of gears on the driven shaft 2, the gear 11 is axially movable relatively to the frame 5. and to this end. the shaft 6 is splined within a sleeve 50 carrying the driven sprocket 7. A head 55 fast on the shaft 6 slides in a recess in the frame 5 and is connected bv a yoke pin 62 to a head 60 slidable on the control bar 70. The bar 70 is turned to cant the frame 5 by the sectors 74, 78 and is slid relatively to the sector 74 to change the plane of the gear 11. The frame 5 is held in gear positions by a tongue 81, Fig. 2, depending from the head 60 engaging in grooves 80<a>, 80<b>, 80<c> &c., Figs. 1 and 4, between upstanding lugs 80 on the frame. The tongue 81 has a depending heel 83 adapted to enter shallow guide, grooves 85, Fig. 1, on the frame. A spring 73 allows the head 60 and gear 11 to follow theinto-mesh sliding of the bar 70 when the parts are in register. A simplified form shown in Figs. 5 and 6 yielding two speeds only is suitable for use as an auxiliary gear on a vehicle and may be placed between the torque tube 113 and differential housing 120 as shown. The support 5 for the shaft 6 of the movable gear 11 is an eccentric cylindrical member which slides bodily along with the gear sectors 74, 78 and control bar 70. The shaft 6 has a sliding splined connection 144 with the propeller or driving shaft 1, which connection allows sufficient universal motion. Gear positions are fixed by a stop 156 engaging notches. 155 of different depths in the frame 5. The gear 11 has a carefully made clutch end. The driven shaft 2 is supported in a flange.d " pilot " member 121.
