Abstract

405,453. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. CLOUDSLEY, J. L., 5, Chancery Lane, London. Jan. 11, 1933, No. 998. [Class 80 (ii).] Infinitely-variable friction gearing of the torus-disc type is combined with reversing- gearing of the type in which a planet-carrier is held fast in reversed drive, the output shaft 8 of the variable gearing serving as the input shaft of the reversing gearing. In the form shown, the variable gearing comprises twin toric discs 1, 2 driving through two sets of rockable rollers 5 a double disc 4 having a splined connection 7 with a drum 6 secured to the shaft 8. There is a thrust-generating device for traction friction at 2a. Bevel pinions 12 supported on a spider 11 mesh with a side gear 11<1> on the shaft 8 and with a side gear 14 fast on a driven sleeve 9 with a transmission coupling 22. Rigid with the spider 11 is a pinion cage 15 upon which is splined a control sleeve 18 with dog ends. For reversed driving, the sleeve 18 is engaged with a stationary dog member 16 so that the pinions 12 are constrained to turn on fixed pivots. For forward driving, the bevel gearing is locked to turn solid by engaging the sleeve 18 with a dog member 17 rigid with one of the side gears. This reversing-gearing has the advantage that its clutch parts are moving relatively slowly in neutral. In a modification, instead of there being a cage 15 rigid with the spider 11 and having a sliding dog sleeve 18 upon it, there is a cage with slots for the spider arms so that the cage itself is slidable to bring dog ends upon it into alternative engagement.
